Furloughs Return For California Workers

Sacramento, CA --- Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is bringing back furloughs for thousands of state workers until California passes a budget.
According to the Associated Press, the governor released a new executive order today that requires state workers to take three unpaid days off per month starting next month. Schwarzenegger says he's trying to conserve cash as the state faces a $19 billion dollar deficit.
The order for furlough days will continue until a new budget is enacted and the Department of Finance certifies that the state has enough cash to meet its obligations through the end of the Fiscal Year. Governor Schwarzenegger says "Without a budget in place that addresses our $19 billion budget deficit, every day of delay brings California closer to a fiscal meltdown."
State Controller John Chiang has warned he will start issuing IOU's in August or September if the budget stalemate drags on in the legislature. The governor's furlough order continues to exempt CAL FIRE and California Highway Patrol employees from furloughs.
