Collecting Food Not Garbage

Sonora, CA -- The ATCAA Food Bank in Jamestown says there continues to be an increasing number of residents seeking food in the community.

A two-week campaign will start later this month in hopes of making it easier for residents to donate extra food items.

Phyllis Wingo with the Food Banks says that during the week of June 14th, trucks carrying students will follow Waste Management collection trucks along their routes in Tuolumne County. After the garbage is thrown into the truck, a bag will be placed next to the can with a list of items that the food bank desperately needs.

The following week residents are encouraged to place food in the bag and place it next to the can filled with regular trash.

Wingo says the ATCAA Food Bank hopes to collect between eight-to-ten thousand pounds of food through this effort. She says the donations will primarily benefit children and seniors.

Wingo says it is a partnership between the Food Bank and Waste Management.
