U.S. electricity demand growth has exploded primarily for new artificial-intelligence data centers, federally subsidized manufacturing plants for chips, and the government-driven electric-vehicle transition. Electricity required to power data centers is projected to increase by 13% to 15% compounded annually through 2030. And it won’t be renewables that gets the job done. Even Obama Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz is predicting that utilities will ultimately have to rely more on gas, coal and nuclear plants to support surging demand. Meanwhile California, New York and other green states are looking at more frequent and extended “brown-outs.”
