"Winter Wonderland" in Calaveras Big Trees

12/28/2012
Hours:  11am - 3pm
Location:  Calaveras Big Trees State Park
Contact:  park office 209-795-3840

Calaveras Big Trees State Park -- The third annual "Winter Wonderland" event will be held at the state park Friday December 28 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Events include a horse-drawn wagon ride through the park in its winter cloak, crafts for kids, music, and hot chocolate and cider and cookies.

Historic Jack Knight Hall is decorated for the Christmas season, including a giant Christmas tree, and will be the center of activities during the day.

The wagon ride takes visitors by the giant sequoias and is the highlight of the event. A volunteer will tell visitors a bit about the history of the park, and along the way an Alpenhorn will provide music in a unique setting.

The event is sponsored by the Calaveras Big Trees Association(CBTA), a non-profit that raises money to support educational and interpretive programs throughout the year. All the money raised by CBTA stays in Calaveras Big Trees State Park. Along with park volunteers, CBTA provides programs such as junior cubs and junior rangers, guided walks year-round, hiking trail maintenance, snowshoe hikes in winter, and Family Day every August. CBTA donations also contributed more than $500,000 toward construction of a new Visitors' Center and Exhibit Hall, now under construction adjacent to the main parking lot inside the park.

Tickets and reservations for "Winter Wonderland" are $12.50 for adults and $8.50 for children under 12 when purchased online at www.winter2012.eventsbot.com, or, if available on the day of the event they will be $15 and $10.
The entrance fee for the state park is $8 per carload.
