With gas prices high and air travel difficult, a growing number of Labor Day travelers don't go as far for their vacations. The result: a "staycation"
If you are staying in the Mother Lode there are plenty of summer weather adventures yet to be had. If you have money saved up now is a great time to get deals, the poor economy has left openings on cruises and airlines that sell last minute for amazingly low prices. Contact a local travel agent in our yellow pages.
If you have been working hard and put your money into an entertainment system enjoy some HDTV (with friends?) If you have TiVo catch up with that, if you have a Wii get a work out! Labor Day isn't the end of the hot weather but if the weather cools slightly as predicted and the smoke abates, grab the sunscreen and get out of the house! Calaveras and Tuolumne wineries sparkle with their bird deterring ribbons. There is a lot going on in Arnold including the the Logging Jamboree. Bear Valley is hosting its Triathlon, the rangers are giving talks and there is always a pancake breakfast or BBQ Those are the best- you can give to charity and satisfy your stomach! My son reminded me that it is the last weekend for Twain Harte mini golf and I haven't been on the Moaning Cavern Zip lines yet. If it gets too hot seek shelter in the air conditioned movie theaters, go bowling, or to the casino. For a list of trails, camping information and lakes see the Recreation guide. My Labor day weekend will likely be doing the labor at home that I have been putting off... I have also put off clothes shopping long enough and will be on the hunt for something thrifty and fashionable.
I hope all Motherlodians find a way to celebrate the national holiday! Enjoy! |
