When the Angels Camp Bypass opened (story here) there was only a temporary speed sign in Valliceto when turning from old highway 4 onto the east end of the bypass. Some took this to mean that they could travel a much faster speed than was safe.

That was quickly fixed, for everyone's safety the speed is posted as 35mph.

City officials and the mayor have also contacted Caltrans about the speed through the intersection of Highway 4 and 49.

Going east and west it is 55mph but going north and south it is 35mph. The worry is if a person going slowly out of town then tries to beat a yellow light, a person traveling 55 off the new bypass will end up in a very nasty accident.

Angels Camp Police do urge extra care. The prudent thing to do is slow down as you approach the intersection especially if the light has just turned green.

This is true for many intersections in the Mother Lode. The concept of "Arrive Alive" is not just important to remember when out drinking, (don't drive) but when in a hurry, distracted, or tired as well.
