Consolidation of Sonora Visitor Centers

Recently, we closed the “Vacation Station” and combined it with our main office on Stockton Rd opposite the Fairgrounds. In the process, we’ve opened up the front lobby area to combine the best of both centers in terms of design and layout. If you stop by, you’ll find a much more open space that’s more inviting and easier to use than in the past – taking the best of what we had with the Washington Street location.

Since the announcement, I’ve heard comments from people wondering why we closed it. The decision was based mainly on economics. The Rim Fire and the shutdown of Yosemite National Park greatly reduced the number of visitors during our busiest season. We felt it essential to reduce our operating costs as a result.

I urge everyone in the community to stop by and see our new “Vacation Station” on Stockton Rd. It incorporates the best features of the former Washington Street location. You’ll find a repainted updated area for visitors that’s warn, friendly and inviting. You can also pick up the 2014 Tuolumne County Vacation Planner for ideas of what to do and see for friends and relatives who visit…and you may get some new ideas for yourself.
