This week I had the privilege of getting out of my office and doing my very favorite thing- showing off myMotherLode.com! With a Mother and Sister who are teachers presenting comes naturally to me.

The fourth Sunday of each month I do a 'walk-through' of myMotherLode.com for a class at Mother Lode Internet for Seniors. Call to register and reserve a spot 536-5800.

For this meeting it was the other end of the spectrum- high school students. It was a small part of the Tuolumne County Youth Leadership Program put on by the Tuolumne County Chamber of Commerce. The whole program must be fascinating!

For our part the students came to tour and learn about the Radio Station. They learned that the K in KKBN, KZSQ and KVML is a letter that is assigned for all radio stations West of the Mississippi. And W is for those East. The next three letters in KVML is an abbreviation for "The Voice of the Mother Lode."

As the youth who will perhaps become the leaders of tomorrow the students of course all had cell phones and two had smart phones. They said that they got their news from the radio and the internet.

Later their was a media panel where I had an opportunity to discuss what the past, current and future issues in media are.

  • What can be prosecuted as slanderous and libel
  • How freedom of speech is often challenged and that the media has to fight for the right to collect information
  • How advertising is separate from the news department to prevent bias
  • The fact that radio is very tightly controlled by the FCC That copyrighted word such as "Super Bowl" may not be used on the radio and those rules are heavily enforced with fines

Were all thoroughly addressed. I pointed out that with a lot of news, news comments are priceless and add so much to the news stories but also carry with it the responsibility not to allow defamatory or misleading claims.

The conclusion and best advice I have for the Youth Leadership of Tuolumne County and tomorrow is:

Reputation is Everything!

Protect your reputation. Do not attack others with out having proof from more than one source.

Basically follow the Golden Rule and tomorrow will take care of itself!
