Boost For Bullet Train Concept

Monday, January 26, 2004 - 06:55 AM

A plan to build a bullet train network between the Bay Area and Southern California is expected to get a big boost tomorrow.

An environmental report due to be released concludes that within 20 years, a high-speed train will be the best way to travel between Northern and Southern California. The release of the report will mark a major milestone for a plan to spend $30 billion to build a bullet train system connecting the Bay Area with Los Angeles.

Still, the ambitious project will still have plenty of hurdles to overcome before rolling ahead. Governor Schwarzenegger wants to reduce funding for the agency studying the project as part of his proposed budget cuts. And, a bond issue scheduled for the November ballot will have to be approved by voters for the project to move forward.
