Rare Trout Recovery Plan Announced

Wednesday, January 28, 2004 - 05:45 AM

The U.S Fish. and Wildlife Service is proposing a half-million dollar recovery plan for what it calls "the rarest trout in America."

The plan could include poisoning a stretch of Sierra Nevada creek to rid it of nonnative competitors.

The Paiute cutthroat trout are native only to nine miles of upper Silver King Creek, which flows into the Carson River south of Lake Tahoe in remote Alpine County.

State and federal wildlife officials want to poison an 11-mile lower section of creek so the Paiute cutthroat can return there as well. Public comments on the draft plan are being accepted by the service's Reno, Nevada, office through March 25.
