Crash Closes Highway 49 Near San AndreasThursday, January 29, 2004 - 01:45 PM
Calaveras County firefighters and emergency crews are working to free motorists trapped in their vehicles after a serious accident on Highway 49 near the Calaveras County Airport.
Two air ambulances have been called in to transport the victims and extra Jaws of Life tools were ordered. The crash first reported just after 1 o'clock. The roadway, about 3.5-miles south of San Andreas, is completely blocked, and traffic is backing up in the area between Angels Camp and San Andreas.
No word yet on the number of victims, extent of injuries or when the highway will be reopened. Try to avoid that section of Highway 49 for while this afternoon.
