Possible Drive-By Shooting in Valley Springs InvestigatedThursday, January 29, 2004 - 12:45 PM
The Calaveras County Sheriff's Department continues to investigate a possible drive-by shooting in Valley Springs.
Just before 7am Thursday morning, deputies were called to Mark Twain Hospital's emergency room, after a male subject arrived with a gunshot wound to the leg. The man, 31-year-old John Westfall, told them he'd stopped to check his tire on the side of Olive Orchard Road, when a blue vehicle drove past, and allegedly shot him. Westfall said he wasn't sure if the pop sound he heard came from the vehicle or from the surrounding area. He reportedly got back into his vehicle and drove himself to the hospital.
Reports say a small-calibre bullet went through his left upper leg, missing the bone and major arteries. Westfall was treated for his injuries and released.
Detectives say Westfall was somewhat evasive while being questioned, saying he didn't want the police involved and couldn't provide any information about the suspect. No evidence was found at the scene, and the investigation is continuing.
