Yosemite Not Affected By Proposed Policies Promoting Mountain Biking

Yosemite, Ca -- New rules that are being drafted by the National Park Service regarding mountain biking are not expected to have an effect on Yosemite.

The Bush Administration has been pushing for revisions to policies that would allow park managers to have more authority to create bicycle trails, rather than leave it in the hands of federal regulators in Washington, DC. This would essentially allow for quicker action and less red tape when constructing mountain bike projects.

“The proposal to allow more access for mountain biking in national parks would not affect Yosemite,” says Park Spokesperson Scott Gediman. “Approximately 95% of Yosemite National Park is federally designated Wilderness. Bicycles, motorized vehicles, and ATV's are not allowed on any of the Wilderness trails.”

Gediman notes that there are already a number of paved bike paths in place along the Yosemite Valley, and says that this is a popular way to see the park.

The Associated Press reports that the new federal rules are expected to be drafted by November 15th, so that they can be approved while President Bush, an avid biker, is still in office.
