Sonora, CA -- 12 year old Edward Winters of Sonora has been positively identified as the juvenile who suffered multiple fractures because of a freak accident at Sonora Elementary School this morning at 7:20.
Winters was driven to school by a neighbor, 25 year old Jesse Rhodes, in a 1974 Ford pickup. According to the CHP report Winters left his backpack in the back of the truck. As Rhodes pulled away from the campus Winters attempted to jump onto the truck and retrieve the backpack. It was at that time that he fell to the asphalt pavement. Not realizing what had happened, Rhodes pulled away from the scene. He was later located by authorities.
Winters suffered possible fractures. He was mediflighted from Sonora Regional Medical Center to the U.C. Davis Medical Center shortly after the accident.
The southbound traffic lane on Greenley Rd. was closed for a short period of time as emergency crews tended to the victim.
