Tuolumne Contingent Hoping To Strike Gold In Washington, D.C.

Tuesday, September 23, 2008 - 01:15 PM

Washington, D.C. -- The Tuolumne County Secure Rural Schools and Community Self Determination Act contingent continues to make its rounds lobbying Congress for an extension of a $2.6 million annual package.

In just a day-and-a-half County School Superintendent Joe Silva says over 50 offices have been visited by the group that includes CAO Criag Pedro, Summerville High School and Twain Harte Superintendent Dr. John Keiter and Sonora Elementary Superintendent Margie Bulkin.

Earlier this afternoon the group enjoyed a productive meeting with Congressman George Radanovich. At this hour the Tuolumne contingent is viewing the Senate vote on an extender bill that includes the Self Determination Act. Silva added that the Senate should easily pass the bill with 74 votes which would make it veto proof. This same bill is expected to be voted upon Thursday in the House of Representatives.

Silva would like a four year extension but he says he would be pleased with a one year extension that would mean $2.6 million for the county. $1.1 million would go to schools, $1.1 million to roads and $400,000 to the Resource Advisory Committee.

Silva added that Margie Bulkin's husband, Greg, is filming the entire trip. Bulkin is an Emmy Award winning film maker.
