Sonora, Ca -- The Sonora City Council has voted to join an alliance with the Tuolumne Utilities District and become a member of the Integrated Regional Water Management Planning Program for the Tuolumne and Stanislaus Rivers.

“We've always felt that the city was an important participant, and a lot of the projects that TUD is going to be doing as part of this plan will benefit the city,” says TUD General Manager Pete Kampa.

The main purpose of the IRWMP is to prioritize regional projects, and work together as an alliance to secure grant funding.

Kampa says that some of the projects that the IRWMP is reviewing include Phoenix Lake protection and improvements, water rights being challenged by other areas, the reclaimed water system and the ditch system overall.

Partners that had signed on previously include Tuolumne County, the Groveland Community Services District, Twain Harte Community Services District and the Forest Service. Other groups involved with the Tuolumne-Stanislaus IRWMP chapter are the Sierra Club, Tuolumne County Farm Bureau and the Central Sierra Environmental Resource Center.
