Feds Urge Habitat Conservation In West Calaveras

Tuesday, August 28, 2007 - 01:10 PM

San Andreas, CA -- The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is asking Calaveras County to step up its habitat conservation efforts in relation to development in the west county.

The service says it is concerned about development's effect on endangered and threatened species in the area.

Tuesday the Board of Supervisors gave county staff the OK to negotiate with the service on how to resolve the problem. Options include a Habitat Conservation Plan for the area that could be incorporated into the current General Plan Update.

A June letter from the wildlife service lists development projects in particular, including Wallace Lake Estates, Crestview Estates and the county's proposed clean up of Cosgrove Creek.

The board's motion says staff will initiate discussions to consider a Habitat Conservation Plan and consider interim development measures for the area. Those measures would be outlined by the wildlife service.
