Sonora, Ca -- Today is National Methamphetamine Awareness Day as declared by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Detective Bill Burr with the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Department says methamphetamine is the drug of choice in the area. In 1995 a drug unit was formed in Tuolumne County, and since that time 147 meth labs have been dismantled. Another 26 labs have been cleaned up. Burr says the drug is popular because it is easy to make and because small amounts can be made in a very quick fashion. The State of California as a whole has been taking steps to crack down on meth labs. Burr notes that fewer people are actually making the drug locally today, than in recent years.
He says most methamphetamine is now being imported from Mexico.
