West Nile Found In Calaveras

Friday, July 28, 2006 - 02:25 PM
West Nile Virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito.

Burson, CA -- Mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus have been found off of Highway 12 between the towns of Burson and Wallace.

The Calaveras County Environmental Health Department says these are the first mosquitoes in Calaveras County to test positive for the virus so far this year.

The mosquitoes are being sent to the state to confirm the positive results.

Human cases have been confirmed in neighboring Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties.

The county will be continuing its surveillance and control activities in the area, as well as in other parts of the county.

The control program includes treating water sources, spraying for adult mosquitoes when necessary and educating the public.

The county says since the program is new, it is also somewhat limited. That is why it asks residents to use precautions. These measures include wearing long pants and long-sleeved shirts when outdoors, secure homes with tight fitting screens, vaccinate horses, and report significant infestations to the county.

To report a dead bird, call (877) 968-2473) or visit www.westnile.ca.gov.

For more information, contact Environmental Health at (209) 754-6383 or visit www.co.calaveras.ca.us.
