Calaveras Officials Lobby For New JailWednesday, March 29, 2006 - 12:05 PM

San Andreas, CA -- Calaveras officials are lobbying for a new jail this week in Sacramento.
Supervisor and board chair Merita Callaway and County Administrative Officer Tom Mitchell are at the California State Association of Counties' annual legislative conference. Before they left, Sheriff Dennis Downum asked that they garner support for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's proposed jail-building bond.
The county's jail is at capacity and as a result inmates are routinely released earlier than scheduled. In 2005, inmates skipped out on 45 years of sentenced time.
The jail essentially operates as a felon only facility. And with a space for only 65 inmates, even felons are being released early.
The public safety portion of the governor's Strategic Growth Plan would add 83,000 jail beds throughout the state.
