Governor Signs Special Education Exemption For Exit Exam

Tuesday, January 31, 2006 - 03:35 PM

Sacramento, CA -- Governor Schwarzenegger has signed a bill that gives a one-year exemption from the high school exit exam to special education students.

The bill by Senator Gloria Romero is intended to settle claims in a lawsuit alleging the required exit exam discriminates against the disabled.

It gives the state one year to come up with a permanent solution for special education students. The class of 2006 is the first that is required to pass the English and reading exam before they can graduate.

Romero, a Democrat from Los Angeles, authored similar legislation last summer, but Schwarzenegger vetoed it after amendments stretched the exemption to two years.
