Sonora Tech Company Helps To Fight Crime Nationwide

Saturday, January 28, 2006 - 09:15 AM

Sonora, CA -- A Sonora based company is marketing new technology to colleges and universities.

MicroID Technologies spokespeople say DataDot Technology takes the form of a tiny particle or “Dot,” the size of a grain of sand.

The DataDots are etched with a unique PIN number that is registered online in a national database.

Once registered, law enforcement can access the information to verify legitimate ownership of lost, stolen, or recovered property.

Developers say the Dots make it virtually impossible for a thief to ever be confident that they have cleaned the property of its rightful owner.

The technology can be applied to laptops, MP3 players, bicycles, TV's, cell phones and musical instruments.

While there is no substitute for common sense measures to prevent theft, most law enforcement groups consider the technology to be a useful tool to combat theft.
