Sonora, CA -- A Manteca man is in custody on carjacking charges stemming from an incident early this morning.
Lieutenant Mark Stinson of the Sonora Police Department says an unidentified man was driving north on Parrots Ferry road when 23-year-old Paul Velasquez flagged him down. Police say Velasquez got into the man's car and asked to be taken to a bar. The man took Velasquez to a bar in Columbia which was closed.
Police say the man refused when Velasquez demanded to be driven to Manteca. Investigators say Velasquez became irate and threatened the man with a simulated weapon under his sweater as the two were driving back to Sonora.
The man then reportedly drove to the Sonora Police Department where he summoned officers. Velasquez fled on foot and was taken into custody at the Sonora Inn.
He remains in custody in the Tuolumne County Jail on $10,000 bail.
