West Nile Horse Fatalities Fewer Than Last Year

Monday, October 31, 2005 - 07:35 AM

Sacramento, CA -- State health officials are speculating that the total number of horses killed by West Nile Virus this year will be lower than last year.

Officials say mosquito activity is on the decline as temperatures cool. There were no reports of viral horse deaths in the state last week, leaving the total number at 199 for the year.

That figure is down 12% from last year. Veterinarians have been urging horse owners to vaccinate their animals against the disease.
