Murphys, CA -- Forty-eight year old Daniel Perkins of Angels Camp was fatally injured Thursday when a big rig lost control of its load on Utica Grade.
The three-axle truck, driven by Larry Clark of Utah, was towing a lightly loaded trailer westbound on Highway 4. While trying to negotiate a curve, Clark's brakes locked up due to the wet pavement, the California Highway Patrol said. The trailer entered the oncoming lane of traffic and into the path of Perkins' Ford diesel pick up. He was killed instantly.
A Ford Expedition driven by 64 year old Sandra Spicer of Murphys was following Perkins. Due to the blunt force of the trailer's impact, Perkins' pick up was knocked back into Spicer's Expedition. She was taken to Mark Twain St. Joseph's Hospital in San Andreas where she was treated and released.
The highway was closed for two and a half hours and traffic was routed down Power House Road.
