Sonora, CA -- Operation STAR, which is the Statewide Traffic Accident Response, is keeping with the spirit of the holidays by begging drivers to observe the law.
Operation STAR partners are pleading with California motorists to slow down, don't drink and drive and always wear their seat belts. The organization has been a year long enhanced enforcement effort by The California Highway Patrol, the Office of Traffic Safety, Alcoholic Beverage Control and many others. Operation STAR targets eight holiday periods during the year for extra enforcement and Halloween is one of them. Halloween weekend is especially dangerous because children are out trick or treating as darkness falls, making them difficult for motorists to see.
CHP Commander Mike Ayala says those who don't get the message not to drink and drive may find themselves in his version of a haunted house, the county jail.
