San Andreas, CA -- Calaveras County farmers have received their wish to have zoning codes in the county modified to better preserve agricultural open space.
The Board of Supervisors yesterday voted 4 to 1 to consider the creation of a new rural zoning classification to make it less restrictive to farm on 5 to 20 acre lots. The decision restricts subdivision and housing development in what are now called "rural residential" zones.
It would also allow for farm-related business such as wine tastings and festivals to be held on those lands.
Opponents of the zoning modification plan fear that it will bring heavy equipment and tourists to residential areas.
Merita Calloway was the dissenting vote.
