French Camp, CA -- The East Union High School footbal player critically injured in a game last weekend has succumbed to his injuries.
Sixteen-year-old Matthew Van Gelderen was in a coma for a week after undergoing surgery for brain swelling last Saturday. He's been on life support at San Joaquin County General Hospital ever since. Doctors declared Van Gelderen brain dead last Friday.
He was injured while blocking an opposing player in a kickoff play in a game in Stockton on September 16th.
