Bill Spurred By Dog Attacks Sent To Governor

Wednesday, August 31, 2005 - 04:10 PM

Sacramento, CA -- Lawmakers have sent the governor a bill that would allow local governments to require spaying and neutering of specific breeds of dogs.

Senator Jackie Speier says her bill would restore powers held by cities and counties 16 years ago. She says spaying or neutering would reduce the aggressiveness of the animals and help limit unwanted populations that end up in animal shelters.

She listed a series of pit bull attacks that killed or maimed children in Northern California, but opponents called the measure a despotic bill and said the state should be cracking down on irresponsible dog owners.

The Senate approved Assembly amendments to the bill today, sending it to the governor's desk.
