Tomato Farmers Feel The Crunch Of Rising Fuel Prices

Wednesday, August 31, 2005 - 08:20 AM

Sacramento, CA -- Surging fuel prices are taking a toll on area tomato farmers who grow processing tomatoes for ketchup, tomato sauce and other products.

The California Tomato Growers Association says harvest costs have escalated from $72 an acre two years ago to more than $200 this year.

They say fuel prices account for the majority of the increase. Farmers say they are having to absorb the additional costs, which is whittling away profits.
