Rangers Step Up Search For Missing Foreign Exchange Student

Monday, July 25, 2005 - 12:30 PM

Yosemite National Park, CA -- Yosemite Park officials have intensified the search for a missing hiker last seen on the John Muir Trail.

Park spokesman Scott Gedman says rangers are focusing their search for 25-year-old Hyundo Ahn around the Merced Lake area.

Gedman says about 50 people are involved in the search, including two helicopters and horseback riders.

Gedman says that although Ahn was well prepared with equipment and clothing, officials are concerned that he may not have enough food. Gedman says Ahn encountered some backpackers on June 22nd and inquired if there was food available at the Sierra Camps.

Gedman says it's very difficult, if not impossible, to carry enough food for the entire hike. Most hikers who take the trail utilize food drops where they can pick up food along the way, which Ahn did not do.

Authorities say Ahn began his hike of the 211-mile trail June 20th, and his bus tickets to Los Angeles and plane tickets to South Korea have not been used.
