Sacramento, CA -- The California prison system is expected to gain more than 6,000 full-time positions next year.
The increase is due to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's proposal to add 11,000 jobs over 2 years. Despite his talk of curbing spending, the state has already added close to 5,000 full time government jobs this fiscal year.
The prison jobs are a result of the large number of inmates in the system, and the state regulations that go along with providing prisoners better health care.
Under Schwarzenegger's budget the new employees will include the staffing for a new maximum-security sate prison in Kern County, which is expected to house 5,000 inmates when it is fully opened in January.
