Officials Vote To Close Arnold High School

Friday, May 27, 2005 - 08:10 AM

Arnold, CA -- The class of 2005 at Arnold High School will be the last.

Officials with the Bret Harte Union High School Board of Education voted Monday to close the school due to a lack of funding.

The move was brought about by a change in funding policy that allows the school district to collect a larger share of property tax revenues, but reduces the amount of state funds it can receive.

Officials say the closure will save about $50,000 a year in rent and maintenance costs and $120,000 in teaching staff expenses.

The school currently has four students enrolled and employs two teachers.

Principal Catherine Jones says the students and teachers will meet after the end of the year to figure out what to do for next year.
