Governor Blasts Lawmakers For Taking Pay Raise

Thursday, May 26, 2005 - 08:35 AM

Sacramento, CA -- Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has some harsh words for state legislators for taking a pay raise when the state is dealing with a budget deficit.

The Governor addressed the California Chamber of Commerce yesterday where he took legislators to task for receiving the raise instead of passing it along to the voters who may need it more.

The governor went on to say that state lawmakers don't deserve the raise because of the state of the economy.

An independent state commission granted lawmakers a 12% raise, lifting the salaries of assembly members and senators to almost $111,000 a year.

Although state law prohibits the governor or the legislature from repealing the pay increase, individual lawmakers can turn down the raise if they so choose.
