California Crime Statistics Fall Overall

Thursday, May 12, 2005 - 08:15 AM

Sacramento, CA -- The Attorney General's Office has released the state's crime figures for last year.

The numbers show a 5% drop in violent crime from 2003, while showing a 1% increase in property crimes. Auto thefts jumped by 2.6%.

In the Bay Area, Berkeley posted the largest decrease in violent crime with a drop of 39.8%. In San Francisco however, there was an increase of .6% while Oakland's violent crime rate fell by 8.2%.

Attorney General Bill Lockyer credits the overall drop in crime to advances in technology and stronger crime-fighting tools.
