Frustrated Lawmakers Trim Prisons Budget To Prompt ReformThursday, April 28, 2005 - 05:05 PM
Sacramento, CA -- State lawmakers frustrated with the slow pace of reforms in California's prison system are slashing Governor Schwarzenegger's corrections budget.
If only to call attention to their concerns as the governor prepares to release his revised spending plan next month. The Senate today approved the bulk of Schwarzenegger's prison system reorganization plan on a bipartisan vote.
That sets the stage for a new consolidated Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to take effect July 1.
But then senators who oversee corrections spending chopped nearly $100 million out of the $7 billion prisons budget.
Senators say they've lost confidence in the department's ability
to oversee its own reform efforts.
