Melones Reservoir Not as Full as Others Around the State

Friday, March 25, 2005 - 09:25 AM

All that rain that has fallen on the region this season has some people smiling. Officials who watch over the area's water supply say thanks to an especially wet winter, many of the area's reservoirs are filled quite nicely.

In the past week, six of the ten reservoirs operated by the Santa Clara Valley Water District have filled up. And a huge reservoir operated by state and federal authorities -- the San Luis reservoir near Los Banos -- is at 99 percent capacity. Officials say it's the first time in seven years that so many reservoirs have had so much water at the same time.

The news is also good for districts that get their water from the mountains. The snowpack in the Sierra is running about 130 percent of normal. Locally, Melones Reservoir is surprisingly only at about 65% of capacity.
