Inmate Tries to Bribe Jailer

Thursday, March 24, 2005 - 02:15 PM

A Calaveras County Jail inmate has been arrested for investigation of attempting to bribe a jailer to help him escape, sheriff's deputies reported Wednesday.

Daniel M. Rocha, 19, was in custody for probation violation at the time he allegedly tried to bribe the jailer, according to Detective L. Blain Smith. Smith said Rocha is accused of offering to pay a jailer cash and a 1979 Chevrolet Camaro. The jailer reported the attempted bribe and deputies investigated Monday. Smith said that they used surveillance cameras and recorded conversations between Rocha and the jailer.

Rocha was questioned earlier this week by the Calaveras County Sheriff Department regarding the death of 19 year old Mokelumne Hill resident David Jessop however Rocha is not considered to be a suspect in the murder, only a person of interest.
