California Issues BioTech Permits

Wednesday, August 25, 2004 - 02:05 PM
Fish like these are one genetically-modified species still prohibited in California.

A report being released this week says wildlife regulators have issued 14 permits for genetically-engineered species in the year since California became the only

state to require such licensing.

They rejected only one: a proposal to market a fluorescent zebra fish now sold under the trademarked name GloFish everywhere except in California.

There's been only one known violation.

A Sacramento aquarium store was selling green fluorescent transgenic Japanese rice fish last year.

But the manager cooperated and let department employees destroy the fish.

Of the 14 permits approved by the commission, 13 were for biomedical research mostly at universities or institutes.

The last one went to a company that provides fish to research and pharmaceutical facilities.
