Truck Driver Plunges To His Death

Friday, July 30, 2004 - 12:40 PM

A Groveland truck driver is dead after his three-axle dump truck plunged 600 feet down a canyon Friday morning.

California Highway Patrol spokesman Tom Wills says the accident happened just before 10 a.m. along remote section of Highway 49 between the communities of Coulterville and Mariposa.

Wills says the driver is from Groveland but his name has not been released by authorities. A Caltrans road crew was first to climb down the canyon to the wreckage. The county coroner is enroute.

Wills added the section of roadway will likely be blocked later today as crews try to get the big rig back up out of the canyon. Cause of the crash is under investigation by the CHP.
