Yosemite Herbicides Trouble Many

Saturday, July 24, 2004 - 04:55 PM

A U-S Forest Service plan to spray herbicides from helicopters near Yosemite National Park is drawing fire from environmentalists, American Indians, and the National Park Service-- which fears herbicide could drift into the neighboring park.

The Forest Service plans to spray 12-hundred acres in the west of the park to kill brush in an area that burned in 1987.

The service wants to burn the dead brush and replant it as a conifer forest. It says the herbicide spraying is safe.

But the Central Sierra Environmental Resource Center and the California Indian Basketweavers Association say it isn't necessary.

They say the spraying will kill beneficial plants, and is part of plans to turn the area into a forest "plantation" for future logging.
