San Francisco Zoo Elephants Move To Calaveras CountyThursday, June 24, 2004 - 11:30 AM
Calaveras County will be getting two new residents called Lulu and Tinkerbelle.
They're the last two elephants at the San Francisco Zoo, and it looks like they're moving to an animal refuge in San Andreas. The zoo decided to relocate Lulu and Tinkerbelle after their two companions died earlier this year.
An elephant sanctuary in Tennessee was also in consideration for their new home, but officials thought the trip across the country would be too taxing on the 38-year-old elephants.
Lulu and Tinkerbelle will move into a 2,300-acre refuge operated by the Performing Animal Welfare Society in San Andreas. The two elephants have been kept in the San Francisco Zoo since 1966.
