Fly Our Flag Properly Today

Monday, May 31, 2004 - 05:55 AM
Gary Van Den Bergh of Jamestown carries a large American Flag during support the troops march in Sonora.

Monday is Memorial Day, and many people will be displaying American flags. The federal government gives the following guidelines when flying the country's flag:

Displayed against a wall, the union, or stars, should be to the flag's right, or to the observer's left side. When hung from a staff projecting from a building or house, the flag's star field should be at the peak.

If suspended over a street, hang vertically with the union to north in east-west street, to east on north-south street. When hung horizontally, the flag's star field should be in the upper left corner. When the flag is displayed on a car, the staff should be attached to the right fender.

When flown at night, the flag should be illuminated; otherwise it is customarily taken down at sunset and raised at dawn.

The U.S. flag should be at the center and at the highest point of the group when a number of flags of states, localities or societies are grouped for display.
