Judge Denies Challenge To Nurse Staffing LawWednesday, May 26, 2004 - 02:45 PM
A Sacramento Superior Court judge is upholding a state law making hospitals hire extra nurses to replace those who go on break.
Hospital executives had sued over part of the law. They call it unrealistic in light of the nation's second worst nursing shortage.
California is the only state that requires extra staffing to cover for nurses temporarily away from their stations.
The 57-thousand member California Nurses Association calls the ruling a sweeping victory for the new staffing requirements.
