"Massive" Fuel Spill In Bay

Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 02:15 PM

Federal officials say emergency workers are trying to clean up what could be a massive oil spill in northern California.

A spokesman for the Environmental Protection Agency says a broken pipeline has leaked as much as one million gallons of diesel fuel into wetlands near Suisun Bay.

But a state environmental official says the amount could be much lower. Officials say they'll have a better idea when the pipe is fixed and refilled.

The 14-inch-wide pipeline ruptured yesterday. Suisun Bay feeds into the San Francisco Bay. State and federal clean-up crews are on the scene.

Authorities are still trying to determine the extent of the damage. They say diesel fuel has spread over an area of 300 yards in the wetlands.
