It's a popular way to reduce speeding, say officials.
And now, the county's new Speed Advisory Trailer is deployed near Soulsbyville Elementary School. Federal grant money paid for the device, according to Randy Murphy, project director from the Tuolumne County Public Works Department.
However, Murphy says the fund will also pay for additional specialty training in the area of "Speed enforcement. $1500 of the grant was to pay for attendance at a seminar or other training opportunity."
As far as the radar trailer, though, Murphy says it will primarily be displayed near schools.
"Most of our complaints are in the school zones. Obviously, our concern there is the children being present, and potentially being injured by someone speeding and not stopping in time for children in the roadway," said Murphy.
CHP statistics for 2003 show last year set a record: there were 34 fatalities on Tuolumne County roads and highways.
