County Employees To Get More Furlough Days

Wednesday, April 28, 2004 - 03:55 AM

"A lot of county employees are being very creative in trying to find volunteer ways to help us implement more and more savings. I'd like to encourage them to continue the thought processes through the end of the fiscal year."

A flexible furlough plan approved yesterday by the Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors will require county employees to take three more unpaid days off by the end of June.

Employees will, however, be able to pick which days they want.

Supervisor Mark Thornton said he's the only supervisor who didn't participate in the furlough, since he capped his salary increase through the end of the fiscal year.

"I don't want to do any more furloughs this year. I think there are some aspects of the furlough that I would want to have more clarity on," Thornton said.

Thornton also complimented county staff members who've worked to come up with new ways to cut costs.

"A lot of county employees are being very creative in trying to find volunteer ways to help us implement more and more savings. I'd like to encourage them to continue the thought processes through the end of the fiscal year," Thornton said.

Along with supervisor Larry Rotelli, supervisor Thornton was outvoted and the furlough days were approved. The vote was three to two.
